The Importance of IRL Design Events.

The Importance of IRL Design Events.

It’s easy to get comfortable behind a screen, but there’s a specific kind of magic that happens when we step out of the studio and into a room full of people who “get it.”

If you’ve been on the fence about booking a ticket for that local creative talk, here is why showing up in person is a total game-changer for your practice, your headspace, and your community.

The Power of Undivided Attention.

Let’s be honest: when you’re watching a webinar or a recorded talk, are you really watching it? Or are you also checking Slack, tweaking a vector point, and wondering what’s for dinner?

Online resources are an incredible tool, but they come with the noise of our everyday surroundings. By physically going to an event, you are committing. Committing your time, committing your brain power AND committing your hard earned cash. It’s making a pact with yourself to be present, to listen, and to immerse yourself fully in the speaker’s journey without the temptation of a second tab.

This uninterrupted focus allows you to gain so much more than some buzz words and 5 seconds of ‘oh cool’ you get from online resources.

Community Over Competition.

Networking often gets a bad rep as something purely transactional or career focused. While it’s great for your CV, the real value of an IRL event is building a safe, familiar and enriching community.

It’s about humanising the sector and getting to know the faces behind local agencies and studios, building that feeling of ‘I know these people’, ‘I belong here’.

Once you feel a part of the club, the more you want to support it and shout about it. When you’ve shared a drink and a conversation with someone, you naturally want to see them thrive. That connection turns competitors into peers. That’s a really powerful shift in an industry that can sometimes feel cut-throat and impenetrable.

Having a local network gives you a space to explore ideas and seek advice from people who understand your specific regional landscape. You’re no longer just one person sitting behind a laptop, you’re a part of your community’s voice.

Catching the “Post-Talk Buzz”.

There is a visceral energy at an IRL event that a Zoom link simply cannot replicate. It’s the collective gasp at a beautiful piece of work, the shared laughter at a relatable freelance horror story, and the hum of conversation afterward.

That amazing buzz of inspiration you feel when you leave a great talk is like a battery recharge. You don’t just walk away with new information; you walk away with the fire to go back to your desk and create something great.

Breaking the “London-Centric” Bubble.

For too long, the narrative has been that you have to be in London to be in the loop. It’s time to shift that perspective. By attending IRL talks in your own city or region, you help transform your town into a hub for creativity. You’re voting with your presence, the more events you attend, the more likely people are to host events in your city!

Supporting creative scenes outside of the capital makes the industry more accessible to different demographics and keeps talent thriving across the country. It proves that world-class design doesn’t just happen in Zone 1.

The Bottom Line.

Online learning feeds your brain, but IRL events feed your spirit. Support your local scene, show up for your peers, and let yourself be inspired by the person sitting in the chair next to you. Where do you want to see more creative events?
