Top five tips to improve productivity

Working at a PR agency, it is not uncommon to be juggling several clients at once and have tasks thrown at you left, right and centre.

So it is important during busy periods to remain productive and ultimately GET SHIT DONE.

1. Step away from the computer

No matter how busy you feel you are it is important to take breaks throughout the day. I often go for a quick walk around the block to get moving and to focus myself. You can’t always be working at optimum productivity so aim for working in short bursts at productive times. The important thing is to give your head a breather, especially if you are working on multiple accounts. You will be surprised at how much more productive you feel after a five minute break.

2. Create to-do lists

I live by to do lists, in fact I am a little obsessed with them. I have a to do list of things that I need to complete by the end of the week in a big notepad and a to do list of the tasks I need to complete by the end of the day in a smaller notepad. If I get really busy, a write the tasks I need to complete in the next few hours on a post it note. I’m not saying you need to go to such extreme measures as me but writing tasks down help you identify which ones are urgent and which ones can wait until later. You also get the rewarding feeling when you tick off each task (or is that just me…) I also spend a few minutes at the end of each day looking at my to do list for the next day and deciding what I must complete first when I come in, meaning that I am focused on my tasks for that day.

3. Have a tidy mind

When you are trying to work it is important that are as little distractions as possible so that you can focus 100% on your task. Try and keep your desk clear at all times and free of clutter – you will be surprised how much this keeps you working productively. Set some time aside at the start of each day to give your desk a quick spruce and then it won’t get out of hand. In addition to that try and keep a tidy office space. This will not only help you remain productive but will help your colleagues remain productive too. Finally, don’t have too many tabs open on your internet browser as it will stop you getting so easily distracted.

4. Complete your most dreaded task first

Got a task for a client that you have been putting off for a while? Or has a client asked you to do something that you think you will struggle with? Do it first thing in the morning and don’t start another task until you have finished it. Sometimes starting a task is the hardest part – just start it and get it done and you will feel much better once it’s off your plate. Not only will you get it out the way early in your day, meaning that you have more time for other clients. But your client will be impressed that you have got it to them before the deadline.

5. Don’t multi task

In PR you will often find that you are working across multiple accounts and projects at one given time. This can make you feel like EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE RIGHT NOW and it is tempting to start lots of tasks at once. Don’t. It is much more productive to tackle each task one at a time and not start (or even think about) another one until that is done. You will be surprised at how much more productive you become.
